Memory management function. This is a wrapper for a function appropriate to the context. The function relinquishes ownership to a copy of memory. If as a result, the memory is to be de-allocated, then before the de-allocation, destructor() is called with ptr and destructParam as arguments to perform any necessary destruction work.
